What Is Adoption?

Last modified 2006-12-20 15:56

Adoption is a permanent, legal process which places a child with adoptive parents who will love and care for the child.

One of the legal definitions of adoption is the creation of parental rights and responsibilities between a child and an adult or adult couple established by a court.   Technically, that is exactly what it is.  Adoption, however, is much more than that.  The Webster's 21st Century Dictionary gives a much clearer definition of what adoption really is; to take as one's own.  When you adopt a child, you are telling that child that you will be his forever family.  No matter what, you will stick by him, take up for him, and be there to support him during the hard times as well as the good.

Currently, there are about 4,000 children in Ohio waiting to be adopted.  These children are white children 8 years of age and older, black children of all ages, children with severe emotional or learning problems and many children who are part of a sibling group who desire to remain together.
